Recording a Video (Capturing from Your Screen) in TechSmith Knowmia

Log in to Knowmia @

Click Launch Capture to launch the video capture dialog.

A new tab will open, click the Open button to open the Capture tool. *See guide to install Capture tool.

Click the red Capture button.

You will now select the part of your desktop to record.  If you have a program open, Capture will automatically try to attach itself to various parts of the screen by hovering your mouse over them.  Simply click the mouse when you have selected the window you want to record.  If you want to record a custom segment, click and hold your mouse button and drag the square over the section you wish to record before releasing the button. You can also click the Fullscreen option at the top center of the screen if you want to record the entire desktop.

Once you have selected the recording area, the recording bar will appear on your screen.  This gives you a final opportunity to select a camera and microphone.  Clicking the partial circle with an arrow on it to the left of the "X" will allow you to re-select the portion of the screen you want to record.  When ready, click the red circle to record. It is recommended you make a quick five second video, which you can delete later, to test your audio.

You will see the portion of the screen begin to countdown starting from 3.  When it reaches zero, the recording will begin.

Record your video.  Anything within the selected area will record.

When you have finished recording your video, click the gray square (stop button) on the recording bar.

After clicking the stop button, you will be given a preview of your recording.  You may review this preview before proceeding.  Clicking "Cancel" will abort the process and allow you to start over.  Clicking "Upload" will send the video to Knowmia.

NOTEYou should be able to hear your recording in the Preview as well.  If the sound did not record for the preview, check your microphone and redo the video.  This is another reason to always do a small test video first.

After clicking Upload to Knowmia, you will get a message that your file is being finalized.  Do not close your browser or the recorder until you get the message stating “Upload Complete”.  After the upload is completed, click OK to close the window.

You can now find the video in your Knowmia Library and edit as necessary.

Uploading Pre-recorded Media in TechSmith Knowmia

If you have created a video outside of Knowmia or in another program and would like to upload it into Knowmia, you can do it by completing the instructions below.
Types of Media Formats for Uploading:  The types of media files that can be directly uploaded are .mp4, .wmv, .avi, and .mov.

Login to Knowmia by going to and entering your login credentials.

In Knowmia, click on the “Create” button in the upper-left hand corner of the screen.  In the drop-down menu that appears, select “Upload Media”.

When the Upload Media window appears, you can either drag-and-drop your media from your computer into the box outlined by dashes or click on the “Select Files to Upload” button.  If you drag-and-drop your media, you will skip the next two steps.

NOTE: If the media doesn’t seem to work or be recognized, click the “View Media Requirements” link in the bottom-left corner of the pop-up window and double check that the file you are trying to upload is an accepted media type.

Locate your media on your computer.  Select it and then click “Open”.  You can select multiple videos at once.
Your media will now begin uploading.  You will see the progress of your upload indicated by dashed lines behind the name of the video.  Once the video is uploaded, you will see the lines turn into a solid green bar as the video is processing.

NOTE: DO NOT shut your computer off or let it go into sleep mode while the files are uploading or processing.  The computer shouldn’t be shut down, put into sleep mode, or the browser closed until you get the confirmation notice shown below.

Once your video has processed, you will get a solid green bar behind the video name with a check mark on the right-hand side.  Click the “Close” button at this point.

You should see your media appear in your library.  It may take some time for the screenshot of the video to appear.  However, as long as the video shows up in the library, it is ready to go.  Click on the video to double-check that it has successfully uploaded.

If your video appears in the Knowmia Player, you are ready to go.  Depending on the length of the media you uploaded, you may have to give it a few minutes to appear in the player.
