Recording a Video in Knowmia

There are two ways to record content from your computer in Knowmia.  First, you can enter through Blackboard and create videos on the fly (see instructions here).  That is faster (especially when adding the video to a specific class), but it also is limited on some of the editing features.  The alternative is to record the video directly in the Knowmia site.  These instructions will focus on the latter option.

These instructions also assume that you have already downloaded and installed the TechSmith Knowmia Recorder on the computer you are using.  If you have not installed it, please view the instructions at Installing the Knowmia Recorder to complete that part of the process.

Open Capture Recorder

Step 1: Login to TechSmith Knowmia by going to and entering your login credentials.

Step 2: Once logged into the site, click the Launch Capture button in the upper-left hand corner of the screen. A new tab opens in a web browser window and attempts to launch TechSmith Capture. The recorder should automatically launch (although you may have a pop-up notice asking you if you want to allow it to launch).  If it doesn’t automatically launch, click “Relaunch” in the message that appears. (see images below)

Step 3: When the Capture dialog launches, you will see a toggle button for the webcam feature- toggle on if you would like to include yourself in the video.  The default camera's name for your device (i.e. internal webcam or external webcam) will already be selected. To switch cameras, click on the drop-down menu if you have more than one connected.
Click Capture or press Shift+F11 (Windows) or Shift+Command+1 (Mac).

NOTE*Currently, Knowmia does not have an ability to test your microphone’s volume or whether or not it is working.  It is recommended you make a quick five second video, which you can delete later, to test your audio.

Record Your Video

Step 1: The orange crosshairs appear. Click and drag to select an area to record. To edit the selected area, complete any of the following:

  • Drag the handles to adjust the selection.
  • To enter a specific size, type the dimensions in pixels into the Width and Height fields.
  • To move the selected area on the screen, click within the selected area and drag the selection to the desired location.

Step 2: The Video Recording toolbar appears.

  • Webcam: Record live video from the connected or built-in webcam. During recording, you can switch between recording the screen or webcam video by toggling the Webcam option on/off.
  • System Audio: Record the sound from your computer such as application alerts or the audio playing from your speakers.
  • Microphone Audio: Record the audio from your computer's built-in microphone or from a connected USB microphone.

Step 3: To start recording, click the Record button or press Shift+F11 (Windows) or Shift+Command+1 (Mac).

Step 4: To stop recording, click the Stop button or press Shift+F11 (Windows) or Shift+Command+1 (Mac).

Upload Your Video

Step 1: After clicking the stop button, you will be given a preview of your recording.  You may review this preview before proceeding.  Clicking "Cancel" will abort the process and allow you to start over.  Clicking "Upload to Knowmia" will send the video to My Library. If your choose to upload your video, you will get a message that your file is being finalized.  Do not close your browser or the recorder until you get the message stating “Upload Complete”. After the upload is completed, click on “Go To Video” to view the video on Knowmia.  (see image below)

NOTE*: You should be able to hear your recording in the Preview as well.  If the sound did not record for the preview, check your microphone and redo the video.  This is another reason to always do a small test video first.

Step 2: Click Continue, and the web browser opens to the video watch page.

  • To change the title and add a description, click the Details tab below the video and click Edit Details.

  • Enter a new name for your video title and a description.

  • Here you can add links to slide decks, PDFs, websites, and other supplemental resources.

Click Save and the new title and description (with the clickable link) are updated for the video.

Step 3: Once done, you will receive a green message saying your video is saved.    (see image below)

Step 4:  Your video can now be found in your Knowmia library.
