Recording a Knowmia Video from a Blackboard Course

You can directly record videos in Knowmia from Blackboard.  This is ideal for quick videos that may answer student questions or address specific course concerns.  Remember that adding the video to the course will include it in course copies of future courses, so if it is specific for the students within the current course, you’ll need to delete it at the end of the semester.

NOTE*: The editing functions for videos created through Blackboard are limited compared to those recorded in Knowmia (although you can login to Athens Knowmia later to edit the video if needed).  For more structured, pre-prepared lectures, it is recommended that you record your videos directly in Relay rather than through Blackboard in order to have immediate access to these features.  For more information on how to do this, please view the Recording a Video in Knowmia instructions.

To record and add a video directly from Blackboard, complete the following instructions:

NOTE*The below steps will get you through the recording steps of the process.  The final step in these instructions will refer you to the Adding a Knowmia Video to a Blackboard Course instructions so your video is actually added to the course.

Step 1: Go to the Blackboard course where you want to add the video.  Within the course, navigate to the area where you want the students to access the video.  Once in the area you want the video to be placed, hover over the Tools option in Blackboard and select TechSmith Relay.  (see image below)

Step 2: Name the video and add a brief description if you desire.  It is a good practice to do this both in Blackboard and on the actual Knowmia video.  This can be done by copying and pasting the text from one area to the other.  (see image below)

Step 3: Scroll down to adjust the additional options.  If you are grading the students on whether or not they watch the video, enter the total points assigned for the video.  If you are not going to grade the video, enter zero.  For more information on grading videos, see the review the Grades and Questions on Knowmia Videos instructions.  Otherwise, the remaining options are standard options on Blackboard items.  Once done, click “Submit”.  (see image below)

Step 4: The item is placed at the bottom of the area in Blackboard, so you may need to scroll down to see it. Click on the title of the item. (see image below)

Step 5: Once clicked, you will see an LTI launch screen.  This screen will automatically change once connected to Knowmia.  This may take a few minutes depending on how many videos you have in your library.  (see image below)

NOTE*In the next step, it is assumed that you have already installed the Knowmia Recorder.  If you have not, please complete the Installing the Knowmia Recorder instructions.

Step 6: Once the system connects, you will see your folders and any videos in your Knowmia Library.  Click on the “Record” button in the upper right hand side of the screen.  (see image below)

Step 7: A new tab opens in a web browser window and attempts to launch TechSmith Capture. The recorder should automatically launch (although you may have a pop-up notice asking you if you want to allow it to launch).  If it doesn’t automatically launch, click “Relaunch” in the message that appears. (see images below)

Step 8: Once the recorder is open, click “Record” to begin the recording process.  If you have not completed the recording process previously, view detailed instructions on how to do that by reviewing the Recording a Video in Knowmia instructions.  (see image below)

Step 9: Once you receive the “Upload Complete" message, your video is successfully recorded and in your Knowmia library.  You can now add the video to the course by completing the steps below.  First, close the browser tab to return to Blackboard.  (see image below)

Step 10: Once you return to Blackboard, click on the content area in the Blackboard breadcrumb navigation to return to the area in which you created the video link in Step 4.  (see image below)
