Some instructors attach rubrics to discussion board assignments to help you understand how your posts will be graded. This guide walks you through how to view and use the rubric both before and after submitting your discussion post.
Viewing the Rubric Before Posting
- Go to your course in Canvas.
- Open the discussion assignment by clicking on its title.
- Look near the top or right-hand side of the page for a "Show Rubric" link or icon (sometimes under a menu with three vertical dots).
- Click it to view the grading rubric.
Note: If you do not see a rubric, your instructor may not have attached one.
Viewing the Rubric and Feedback After Posting
- In your course, click “Grades” in the left-hand menu.
- Locate the discussion assignment and click its title.
- On the submission details page, look for a “View Rubric” button or link on the right-hand side.
- Click it to see how you were graded for each criterion.
- Your instructor may leave comments directly within the rubric or in the general feedback area. Use this feedback to improve your future discussion posts.
Why Rubrics Matter
- Rubrics show exactly what your instructor is looking for.
- They help you self-assess your work before posting.
- Following the rubric can help improve your grade.
